If you find yourself occasionally falling into reveries that have you reminiscing about classic BioWare RPGs like Mass Effect and Dragon Age then developer Spiders might just have the tonic you need.
Greedfall is an action RPG set in the 18th century that has you (and many other settlers, mercenaries and treasure hunters) setting foot on a remote and mysterious island brimming with magic and rumoured to be home to lost treasures and secrets. You'll find yourself smack-bang in the middle of growing tensions between invading settlers and natives protected by supernatural emanations of the island's magic.
This is a game that's big on its RPG elements. Unusual classes and a skill tree that enables you to mix and match however you like mean that you can approach GreedFall however you see fit. Combat options that include 18th century rapiers, flintlock pistols and a healthy dose of magic (as well as a tactical pause option) mean that you can fight your way through the game if you choose to, but you could equally choose to deploy diplomacy or more stealthy skills.
Whatever you do, you'll have to navigate relationships with (romanceable) companions and the warring factions while you go. GreedFall also boasts customisable characters, the option to craft weapons and gear and a tweak to fast travel that allows you to buy items, craft and deal with your companions while you wait for the next zone to load. In other words, this is a big, beefy RPG package in a unique setting!
