With a little help from Digital Jesters, developers Cyanide bring you something a little bit different: fantasy sports title Chaos League. Owing more than a little to weirdy-beardy favourite, Games Workshops Bloodbowl board game, the game fuses the video game genres of sport, RPG and RTS to bring you an experience unique to digital gaming.
The rules of the original Chaos League were simple: there are none, well, one get your ball into your opponents end zone to score. You can shun the quest for points though if you wish beat the other team insensible and you should have a fairly good chance of winning. Now both fans and newcomers get a treat with the release of an update: Sudden Death.
Gameplay gets a bit of an overhaul, with improved interface and commentary, and the addition of player cams and action replays. The original races available were the usual selection of fantasy stereotypes: dwarves, elves, humans, orcs, goblins, undead and a few more besides. Now three more are added to the mix: gnomes, cigulae and the damned.
As well as new races you get 19 new hero characters and 4 new crowds. All the stadia get new tribes of supporters and atmospheric sound effects. In the thick of things, you can now assault the referee, execute combo moves, and target key opposition players for elimination. If youre playing alone, AI is improved and theres a new one player tournament mode to get stuck into.
New unlockables and too many minor tweaks and improvements to list are all part of the package. If you want to play an innovative, violent fantasy sports title, then this is the only one to get. Indeed, its the only one on the market.
