Summary

Card battle games have been lurking the streets of Japan for decades now, but they are rarely given a chance to prove their worth on Western shores. However, the recent flood of anime cartoon series has also brought with it a hardcore number that goes by the name of Duel Masters. And to accompany the cartoon and its shop-shelf trading cards is Sempai Legends for GBA.

Well suited to Nintendo's handheld platform, this latest incarnation of the popular Japanese franchise is, at its core, a thoroughbred card-battling sim that sees players competing with others for the schoolyard crown. It's a game really designed for - but not limited to - kids aged around 8-14 years old.

There are some 120 cards to battle with here, each of which have their own attributes, advantages and weaknesses in battle. It's really down to the players to know the rules and get the best out of their decks. The rule set for Sempai Legends is indeed a little more complicated and in-depth than its Yu-Gi-Oh rival, but the inclusion of tutorials and advanced explanations of the game's intricacies help to overcome any difficulties the player might have getting to grips with the play mechanic.

There is a short story mode available for the single-player gamer, but the most involving and addictive gameplay lies in Sempai Legends' multiplayer battle arena. Armed with a link-cable, or preferably a wireless adapter, Sempai Legends masters can take to the streets to challenge anyone they so wish. Sempai Legends is a game designed with multiplayer tournaments in mind, and provided you can get at least one of your friends involved, you'll have a great time playing it.
