There are war games aplenty for the over-populated RTS PC-owning community, but there are only a few that put all their energy into the management of a world war situation. Airborne Assault is one such rarity, which puts its players into war at an operational level.
You'll be responsible for leading some 40,000 men into combat in what could have been one of the most decisive and influential wars of the 1940s. You'll engage in battle ranging from Brigade to Corps level, using companies and battalions as your pawns in the world's most deadly game of chess.
There are a total of 29 scenarios, in which you can control over 400 different units, each with a specific purpose. You can make use of a 'micro manager' to command individual units, zoom in and out to get a good picture of the battlefield, and even do away with computer AI as you engage in mass combat with other players over the Internet or LAN.
Historical vector-drawn topographical maps accurate to four metres ensure a great sense of realism is put on the player, and the SceneMaker application gives RTS veterans the opportunity to edit and create scenarios for increased variety and an extra challenge.
Airborne Assault is well suited to the PC format, and with a broad range of controls, menus and an overall diverse game engine, it's an RTS of the hardcore variety. One to sink your teeth into.
