Summary

Vivendi’s Real War, an all-singing, all-dancing real-time strategy game, gives fans of the genre exactly what they wanted – a real war. Well, at least in a digital sense.

First of all, Real War has been based upon the official Joint Chief of Staff’s training program, developed exclusively for the military. This feature alone should turn a few heads. But there is a substantial difference within this version of the ‘simulator’. Players are not only able to assume control of the US military for the good of mankind, but they also have the ability to participate as a terrorist army – and win.

Visually, Real War is typical of other games in the genre. In-game scenarios are viewed in a 2D format with a high level of detail and an isometric viewpoint. This facilitates optimal control of the gaming area. Players can see exactly what is going on over vast spaces and adjust their strategy accordingly.

Real War consists of some 24 individual missions, split between Military and Terrorist campaigns. There are over 50 attack and defence units to control that include fighter planes, troops and huge warships. This array of variables makes Real War highly complex and can take some getting used to, especially for new players of RTS games.

Combat aside, players must also manage resources and replenish supplies if necessary. It may sound like a comparitively simple side quest, but it all adds to Real War’s element of strategy.

Real War is a truly accurate real-time strategy experience. It takes practice to master, but it’s well worth the effort. Stunning.
