Summary

There's an old saying that goes something like 'you can never have too much of a good thing', and while EA were definitely pushing the 'good things' envelope with the last two instalments of their FIFA titles, FIFA 2001 for the PSX is something of a return to form.

Less frantic than the 2000 version, and A LOT less frantic than FIFA 99 (what were those players on?), this latest release, which is also going to be available as a graphically lush PS2 title, features motion-captured animation from Lothar Matthaus. Let's face it, if you were as old and sluggish as the once great German international, you would expect the action to slow down a bit. This is not a criticism, it adds inestimably to the playability of the game. Besides, other players involved in the production process include younger, speedier types such as Thierry Henry and Edgar Davids - certainly no slouches.

With its official licence intact, and fifteen domestic leagues available as well as all the major (and not so major) international teams, FIFA 2001 is an essential purchase for the hardcore footy fan, not simply because of its authenticity of detail, but because EA are finally catching up with Konami's majestic ISS series. The game-play tweaks in FIFA 2001 mean higher artificial intelligence for the opposition, and smoother flowing player movements under your own control. All this and a scratch and sniff disc too. What can you smell? You'll have to get hold of a copy to find out. Even if you're unimpressed with the aroma, there's a playability about FIFA 2001 that should ensure longevity.
