Summary

"TV, it's just like watching TV, it's just like watching TV, it's just like watching TV". For those of you who aren't football fans, imagine 'Blue Moon' with its lyrics replaced. FA Premier League Stars 2001's sumptuous graphics could be mistaken for a small screen telly if it weren't for the figure with the short temper, blisters and sweaty joypad facing the screen. Pretty much like the original, this update is fast and furious, end-to-end stuff. If only the real Premier League was as consistently exciting as this.

Terrace sing-alongs aside, there are more familiar voices throughout the game, with ITV and Sky Sports presenters on hand to proffer pearls of wisdom about the beautiful game. The old familiar STARS award system is retained from the original version, where you can earn better players by demonstrating your talents on the pitch The FA Premier League Stars 2001 is unique in that it offers the facility to gamble your team's players against the opposition. Lose a game, and you lose the player you wagered. Win it, and you get their star player. The computer game equivalent of 'going down the bookies' on a Saturday lunchtime. EA Sports seem to have designed this game with those freezing, rainy days in mind. You know, the ones where you'd rather stay home than be present at the dullest game ever, and at the mercy of the elements. And we love them for it.

It's not a phrase that's often used in describing a football title, but FA Premier League Stars 2001 is not for the faint-hearted, and certainly not for those with attention deficit…erm, disorder.
